Mommy Sayang

This wonderful book is by Pixar and Disney, part of the artist showcase they do. The artist is from a Malaysian background and this book is based on her mother.⠀ ⠀ Mommy Sayang means Mommy Dearest in Malay, and is a beautiful title to a beautiful book. The book is about the strong loving bond between a mother and her daughter. ⠀ ⠀ The book introduced the characters nicely, showing how the mother takes care of her daughter, and how even chores become fun. One day, Mommy gets sick and the little girl is left feeling really lonely. She finds a beautiful flower and takes it to her mother, giving her love and telling her she will always be there for her (something her mom always told her). With her daughter’s love, Mommy is back to normal soon enough and outside playing with her daughter again.⠀ ⠀ One of my favorite pages was when the mother is wearing a prayer outfit (this is a special hijab that is worn at home during prayer over the whole body. It is used over any work clothes that might be not covering the body properly for prayer, and is super convenient for muslim⠀ women around their home. )⠀ ⠀ The book also shows how the mother was at home without her hijab. This emphasizes that Muslim women don’t wear their hijabs in their homes and by their families.⠀ ⠀ The Quran is shown on its stand by the prayer mat, and it seems that Mama is reading it in her bed as well. This is a beautiful way to show how this holy book is the center of our lives and we read it everywhere, especially when someone feels sick!⠀ ⠀ This book isn’t necessarily an Islamic book, but its inclusion of small Islamic details made it so special for us to read. It is the perfect book for showing diversity, and I applaud pixar for this book. ⠀ ⠀ Get your own from Amazon!
