Muslim Book Review: Egyptian Lullaby

This is a muslim book review of an Egyptian book that has to be one of my favorite books this year and my kids keep asking for me to read it over and over!!

Genre: Picture Book

Ages: 4-6

Author: Zeena M Pliska

Illustrator: Hatem Aly

Publisher: Roaring Brook Press/Macmillan

A little girl’s Auntie comes from Cairo to visit and tells stories of the streets of Egypt, with the swishing of the Nile, and the clipclopping of the donkey’s feet on the street, the call of the muezzin from the mosque, the kids running in the streets playing soccer and so much more. But when Ametti is gonna leave and the little girl cries, she tells her to remember that when she sleeps, Cairo wakes, and to let the lullaby of Egypt sing her to sleep each night.

Ahhhh the sweet story and the gorgeous illustrations and the rhythm and onomatopoeia repeated throughout the refrain (which is in the rhythm of “the house that jack built”) makes for a delightful and soothing bedtime story to be read again and again for kids.

My heart was warmed and even though I am not Egyptian, the book made me smile so wide and it is a book I will def treasure!

Def a must have!
