Muslim Girls Rise
A note before I review: there are a few figures represented in the book that I know are controversial in the Muslim community. I am aware of this, and I know this might make some readers uncomfortable with the book. I understand those views, but I feel it has many benefits and fills a hole in our society. Bravo to @salaamreads and @sairamirbooks for such a detailed and beautiful non-fiction resource. I hope this book ends up in every library and school.⠀ ⠀ Read on for my full review:⠀ ⠀ This new picture book is absolutely wonderful! The first thing I noticed is the detail in the beautiful pictures. I have seen @aaliyamj illustrate other books, and her illustrations of hijabs never fail to amaze me. The quality of the cover and the pages is superb, and the images are heart-warming to look at.⠀ ⠀ The book is around 40 pages with an introduction the the word “RISE” . The intro was wonderful, mentioning hints of Nusaibah(RA), Aisha(RA), and other sahabi women that have in the past “rode into battle” and “spread knowledge”. It displays Islam as an inspirational religion with a rich history of strong, wonderful women.⠀ ⠀ There are around 19 women represented (one of whom is fictional!) and around half of them are Hijabi. I am personally hijabi, and it is awesome to see how there are over 10 real life examples of how Hijab does not hold a Muslim woman back! I also appreciate the representation of Muslim women that choose not to wear hijab, because I think its very important to see the diversity of Muslims and to not discount those who don’t cover. ⠀ This book shows that Muslim women are embedded in and contribute to every aspect of life, whether in politics, education, sports, media, etc. ⠀ ⠀ Many stories are represented, and this book is a resource with real examples for little girls to look up to. And even if you don’t connect with one story in the book, there are many other stories to see yourself in as well. My personal favorites were @muzoonalmellehan , @daliamogahed , @ibtihajmuhammad , @ilyasahshabazz , and @sharmeenobaidchinoy ⠀ price: around 16 usd
