The Proudest Blue
Wow, honestly, this book just floored me with how amazing it was! I love how Ibtihaj Muhammad brings to life her sisters’ story and successfully makes it relatable to every reader!⠀ ⠀ The style of writing was simple and powerful, no extra wordiness here! SKAli is one of my favorite writers and I can definitely see her touch in this wonderful book.⠀ ⠀ The illustrations by Metahatem - Hatem Aly were absolutely phenomenal, and the colors, fonts, and designs all wowed my kids.⠀ ⠀ The book primarily speaks about how Faiza is so proud of her older sister Asiya for wearing hijab.⠀ ⠀ I thought the sweet sisterly bond in the book was the best part of the book, and the nurturing way that Faiza kept looking out for her older sister reminded me of how I used to look out for my siblings and worry about anyone hurting their feelings. The pride in Faiza reflects the pride of every loving sister in seeing her siblings do something awesome, like wear hijab, and Faiza’s pride was so infectious that it really infuses the reader with pride for hijab as well!⠀ ⠀ Other themes of this book include how to deal with bullying. Faiza recalls tidbits of advice from her mother on how to ignore negative words, and that hurtful words “belong only to those who said them”. This is so powerful for young kids to hear, and it teaches them to brush off other people’s comments and be proud of who they are.⠀ ⠀ I also love how the book shows that Faiza keeps running back and forth, but that the longest steps were notably away from the bully. It took Faiza extra effort to distance herself from the harsh words than it did from the nice ones of her sister, and this is true even in real life.⠀ ⠀ I also love how Faiza wonders why she is whispering about hijab and adjusts her tone, worried that it might come off as being ashamed of being Muslim. I know I have been in such situations before and have had the same worries as her, and it is so awesome seeing her be strong!⠀
Thank you @littlebrownforyoungreaders for such an awesome book about Muslims! This makes me so hopeful for diverse literature!!!🎉
