The Queen, The King, and the Hoopoe Bird
A note: this book is non-fiction, so some children might be reluctant to read it if they are used to imaginative/fiction stories. ⠀ Age recommendation: both genders ages 9-12 ⠀ Screening: there was a mention of the rules of war, which I found a little confusing for young readers and not necessary for the story.⠀ ⠀ This book is by Dr. Usman Omarji, an Islamic scholar and director at Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research.
I really appreciate that this book is by an Islamic scholar, because it verifies that this story from Islamic history is authentic and correct. ⠀ This book is told from the perspective of the Hoepoo bird, and is about Prophet Sulaiman (AS), including the story of Queen Bilqis of Saba. I learned a lot, even though I thought I knew the whole story beforehand since I am really interested in Prophet stories. It is engaging and interesting to read. ⠀ It is a non-fiction story but it is written in a simplistic way that could be understood by children ages 9-12. It does have a lot of information and a lot of details so I would recommend it more for the older ones in this age group. ⠀ ⠀ I did like how it was a book that included a lot of Islamic knowledge while also helping young children see how interesting and powerful Islamic history is. We need more books for our young with detailed Islamic history!⠀ ⠀ I did feel like the story did veer off track sometimes as well as include some matters that did not really pertain to the story; it was also preachy to the reader at times.⠀ ⠀ Also, some parts of the book seemed a little choppy, but probably because it is Non-fiction.
Fiction stories are based in the imagination are usually told with more freedom, whereas this story had to be told with only authentic knowledge. ⠀ ⠀ The illustrations were a nice touch, though I feel like they were not necessary. The words on their own display good imagery of the story. ⠀ Overall, this story is useful for people that want to learn more about the story of Prophet Sulaiman, especially in an academic type setting. It is split into chapters and so could be split into multiple lessons.⠀ ⠀ price: around 20 usb
